Bio and Contact

Andy Villanueva is an award winning documentary filmmaker. She was born in Mexico and immigrated to Toronto, Canada, where she lives. She is a NeXt Doc fellow and has screened in festivals such as Sundance, TIFF Next Wave, and Xican Indie Film Festival.

In 2017, Andy received the Horizon Award at the Sundance Film Festival as well as won the “dub-dub” award and screened her short film in Times Square NewYork. In 2018 she was named a feminist hero by Flare Magazine, and received the status of Women Award in 2014. Recently she received the most innovative award for her Thesis film “Freefall”.

Andy has directed several short films and documentaries and has participated in diverse cinematographic projects. She’s directed films for organizations such as YWCA and produced content for a University of Ottawa initiative called eQuality Project. She is known for her successful teenage activism and for leading film based impact campaigns Andy Villanueva has been featured in articles by the CBC, Buzzfeed, National Post, Metro Morning, and the Toronto Star.
